Tenerife hiking
Hiking in Tenerife is not only possible all year round, but offers a lot of variety, unforgettable impressions and impressive experiences.
The Canary Island is a paradise for hikers with different levels of difficulty, to the high alpine tour of Spain’s highest mountain, the Pico del Teide (3718 m).
While the Anaga Mountains and the Teno Mountains with their dense laurel and tree-lined forests are highly recommended to nature lovers and botanists, the Teide National Park with its caldera form special challenges for fitness-oriented mountaineers.
Hikes in the Teno – Mountains (El Macizo de Teno)
In the north-west of Tenerife you can find the Teno Mountains. It is one of the oldest parts of the island, which originated 17 million years ago as an independent island.
Characteristic are very large differences in the height of the numerous Barrancos, which drop steeply.
The highest peak is the Cruz de Gala (1345 m).
The total area is about 80 km2.
Hiking in the Anaga-Mountains (El macizo de Anaga)
In the north-east of Tenerife, the Anaga Mountains offer hikes on wild, natural trails. They have almost fairy sections through green forests, which have a special charm. There are numerous legends around witches in the area.
Due to the fact that here is the wettest region of the island with lots of rain and humidity, the forest of laurel trees thrives so magnificently and gives the island an “Irish touch”.
Since 1994, the National Park Parque Rural de Anaga has been under special protection. The Roque de Anaga forms the northernmost tip of Tenerife and is a popular postcard motif.
The highest mountains are Cruz de Taborno (1024 m) and Chinobre (909 m).
The total area is about 160 km2.
Hiking in the Teide Nationalpark (Las Cañadas del Teide)
Our enthusiasm for hiking led us here before on Tenerife to some walks such as the Roque de los Brezos, Roque del Conde or the Malpais de Guimar.
Until we one day “discovered” the crater plateau for us.
The challenge of the height and the breathtaking impressions, which fascinate one up here, let Laura and me become more and more an idea to the goal:
We want to visit the 10 highest peaks of the island of Tenerife.
The ten highest peaks of the Canary Island of Tenerife
On May 31, 2014, at 9:40 am, it was finally time. We were standing on the last missing peak. Surprisingly, almost a bit wistfully, we looked back in memories of the tours. After all, you could really follow all our previous hikes and goals from up here.
It gave us a little pride to have stood on all these mountains.
In 5.5 months we reached this goal in the hiking tour area.
The mountains are all located in the Teide National Park:
Guajara, Pico Viejo, Montaña Blanca, Montaña Rajada, Montaña de Pasjajiron, Roque de los Almendros, El Sombrero, Teide, Sombrero de Chasna and the “La Pitufina”, crowned by Laura.
CONCLUSION
Hiking in Tenerife is a must for activists and hikers. The island has to be seen on foot …
Hiking trip Tenerife
Enjoy a week of hikes and adventures in Tenerife, explore the island, enjoy typical food and, especially far away from the mass tourism, get to know the country and the people.
This was and is the goal for our group trip to Tenerife. Because of their own living on the Canary Island, there are some special places and hikes that are not familiar to everyone …
How a week can end and what experiences are on the program is best to read in the following part:
The first hiking trip to Tenerife with a group of 14 from Fichtelgebirge stood. All members of the FGV (Fichtelgebirgsverein), Ortsgruppe Bischofsgrün.
Day 3: Hike in the footsteps of the Guanches
After learning more about Hermano Pedro, the only saint of the island of Tenerife, we started our hike today. At first we descended into a Barranco. After crossing this section typical of the volcanic island, the climb to the Roque de los Brezos, which we all managed together, followed. We shared the group due to the different “traveling intentions”. While one of them rode directly down into the valley to Arona, the other one set out to mount the Roque del Conde (Ischasagua). This demanded security and dizziness. The view from this cliff was impressive: down to the tourist harbors by the sea, Los Christianes and Las Americas and on the other side to the Teide National Park.
The descent over the lighter side is varied and offers further great views. The canyon crossing before Arona is a regular experience, which also the other group liked very well. We find this in a cafe where we meet again. Karl and Michael previously helped an older lady, who at first made a very bad impression. However, this turned out to be a strongly alcoholic state. In any case, the woman could be helped, which she also rewarded with several “Te amo” and “Te quiero”.
Day 4: Acclimatization tour on the Montana Blanca
In preparation for the Guajara, the entire group went together to the “white” mountain. This path and climb is very well suited for acclimatization for more challenging hikes and mountains in Tenerife.
Day 5: The morning of the fifth day was free at Granadilla. Next to the museum, cafes and the town hall were explored.
In the afternoon we watched the surfers in Medano and settled down at a beach bar, where a supposed beach beauty as Hombre turned out.
Day 6: Hike to the 2718 m high Guajara
Well recovered and motivated, we took the Guajara summit in two groups. The weather was fantastic and there were impressive views of the islands of La Gomera, El Hierro, La Palma and Gran Canaria. Besides, at any time the Teide was mighty over all of us.
Everyone at the Parador de Cañadas del Teide was in a good mood for a refreshing drink. Also here, the separation worked out excellently, each participant could choose his pace and was satisfied with the tour.
Day 7: Individual day program
The day at leisure was completely different:
- Relax in the great accommodation
- Excursion to the sea
- Exploring Ifonche and the surrounding area
In the evening the 77th birthday of a participant was celebrated. Despite Calima, the outdoor sitting was pleasant and the right conclusion of a great hiking week.
