Guayaquil – Ecuador’s heart?
Guayaquil (officially Santiago de Guayaquil) is the capital of the Ecuadorian province of Guayas and the largest city as well as the main port of Ecuador.
Since I live since August in the strongest inhabitants city of Ecuador (with more than 2.5 million people) and teach in Guayaquil at the German school, I will give you an overview of my new home and report of special experiences and personal insider tips.
Violence in Guayaquil
Tropical humid port city
The climate in Guayaquil is tropical humid classified as. You sweat without doing anything, and must be only “resign”. The locals sweat, so don’t be afraid before wet shirts 😉
At night the thermometer falls never really under 20 degrees and you learn as a friend to look at air conditioners. However, it is in some areas or Places of I think that extremely exaggerated. I would be in the cinema of the Rio Centro – without jokes almost froze to death.
Mosquitos and insects?
In about four weeks, I was stung by mosquitoes a couple of times, but had the same effect as in Germany and would be at least as often occurred during this period.
A few bees flying around sporadically and a large Grasshopper could as insects ‘discovered’ are. It was then also on insects in the urban jungle.
Somewhat annoying I are finde-how the ants, with which you should arrange themselves and consider them as pets. Madness, how fast on walls move the larger (if one intends to hunt these dear little creatures) and how rapidly sweet liquid droplets or crumbs pounce on them.
Security in Guayaquil
For years, it will be tried to improve the image Guayaquil’s as dangerous and tumultuous South American port city.
My neighborhood Los Ceibos and Samborondón, Urdesa, and even a few are considered safe and there is increased police presence.
Other districts, however, are valid as or are grey, dirty, and dangerous. The Foreign Ministry recommends increased vigilance in the city, armed robberies on Intercity and commuter buses had occurred in the area of Guayaquil.
Many locals clearly warn at night to be on, because large parts of the city with three million are simply unsure. This also applies to blind corners in the Centre, at the Mercado Central, or in parks. Tourists should be on the road in the dark by taxi.
I will do as soon as my Spanish better become is still the “rich quarter” with police and security services, paid leave and take a look at other districts of Guayaquil’s. Without smart phone, jewelry and limited amount of cash, “to be able to offer something”, if there is a RAID.
Gap between rich and poor
Much money is spent and promenades as well as attractive tourist destinations are created, which should use to hide the problems and situation of I believe that actual, vast enormous security volume.
Guayaquil can offer so much and there are other places that would be erkundenswert, unfortunately, but this keeps the fear of attacks or just the reason and General Security Advisory.
There are district, one should avoid in Germany in some cities, here but it’s already strange when it moves with the taxi from A to B and just not easy even to choice can make a walk or stop at a place.
Perhaps therefore another way should be embarked on, the gap between rich and poor are not even bigger and above all visible can be than is currently the case.
Perhaps the city could be automatically safe, because the need to keep, by thefts and robberies over water would stopped or at least contained.
