The Prebischtor – the largest natural sandstone gate in Europe
The Prebischtor (Czech: Pravčická brána) is located in the Bohemian Switzerland. It is the best-known, most visited and researched object in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park, which fascinates over 100,000 visitors each year.
The slender rock formation is the largest natural sandstone rock bridge in Europe. Its span is 26.5 m, the height 16 m, the maximum width 8 and the archway thickness 3 meters. Pravčická brána is one of the most outstanding natural monuments of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.
With an open mouth we approach this gate and wonder aloud: How does this last?
Hike to the Prebischtor – Czech Republic
For this reason, we chose Hrensko (Herrnskretschen) as a starting point for this tour.
From Hrensko to the Prebischtor
Directly at our pension U Forta we started the hike to the Prebischtor. Due to the month of February and no winter conditions, the first stretch was very muddy and we had to leave the trail to even manage this section.
Farther up, a truly fabulous path began over roots, rocks and … sand. For a very long time no such path hiked, every step becomes a hiking experience. The views to the left down into the valley and on the other side lying rock groups enrich the route also.
Like at the beach
You read that right, sea! On the “forest floor” there is no earth or other normal Undergund, which is suspected in the forest. But sand.
Due to the predominant sandstone, which is very porous, you will find a lot of sand at the bottom of the mighty rock formations. Later, even deep in the canyon on the slopes, we should discover that the forest floor is not really typical, but mainly made of sand.
Not only the amazing landscape, but also the geological features of Bohemian Switzerland are truly fascinating.
However, in our time no one is there to control (usually costs 3 € per person) and we can go up for free (to the opposite rock formation) with a view of the Prebischtor and the great landscape.
Difficult way back
After numerous snapshots we choose a different route for the descent and return.
Although without a map, but equipped with an overview of the trails, we follow the markers until they suddenly lose … and now?
Along rocks or across country?
After the walk along the rocks with the porous underground is not that great, we search for and find a way out and what kind of a.
An ingenious crevice for which only the chosen path made sense.
Finally, we come to the trail, which we follow up and return to the starting path
Following this, we return to the starting point in Hrensko (Herrnskretschen) after just under four hours.

Conclusion to the Prebischtor
This sandstone gate should definitely be seen with your own eyes. The National Park Bohemian Switzerland is a great hiking area and an absolute recommendation, even for a day trip from the Fichtelgebirge.
